Olympia
London
3rd January 1976
I think three of us went to this, Me Age and who!, got the
train to Fenchurch and then the Tube to Olympia we got
there about 11.30 and I was going to meet a mate from work
”Derek Bourne” got to the stadium and the queue went for
miles so we started at the front and started walking about
10 yards from the front there was Del and a couple of his
mates, so after a little bit of light banter we snuck in the
front with them.
Doors opened and it was a mad rush for the front of the
stage, don’t even remember any barriers just a yellow line in
front of about a five foot high stage.
First Band on where “Charlie” seem to remember them going down quite well with the crowd, then next
was “Be-Bop Deluxe” who I’d really got into already saw them at the Dagenham Roundhouse and had all
three of there Albums out so far, so my judgement might be clouded but thought they were brilliant
and went down great with the crowd.
Next up were the “Pretty Things” cant remember much about them, do remember about this time I
brought a Morris 1100 hundred from a neighbour and somebody gave me an Eight Track player and about
four cartridges one of which was Freeway Madness which I played a to death in the car, found the vinyl
copy years later in a bargain bin and was not that impressed with it, how tastes change, will have to give
it a listen have converted it to digital so on my laptop.
Next on was “Ronnie Lane and Slim Chance”, these did not go down well, a bit too laid back for the
audience and I must admit I wasn’t impressed, but looking back now Ronnie made some fine tunes back
then!
Then we had “Nazareth” well I think it was them it took about half hour for the dry ice to disperse, but
they went down great with us and the audience.
Then “Bad Company” was looking forward to this and they didn’t disappoint, storming from the off, they
had two Albums out by this point Bad Co and Straight Shooter and I think they played every track, Mick
Ralph’s great riffs and the “Voice” of Paul Rodgers was just sublime and the great rhythm section of Boz
Burrell and Simon Kirke, remember they did two encores and the crowd were still going crazy, when
Simon Kirke came back on sweat pouring off him and said sorry I’m just to fucked to play anymore and
that was that.
The next weeks Sounds Newspaper hand a photo from the front of the stage where you could clearly
see us all in it, below New Musical Express front page which shows us but not so prominent.
